Perry is a Chicago native, she was born into Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Perry made her debut in the television screen in the role of Jackie Harris, a character that was played by her mother on Roseanne, an ABC comedy Roseanne. Her parents, however, didn't want her to perform until she turned an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry stated that she was too timid to perform at the age of 16, but she began doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she landed small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness brought Perry her back home California which was where theatre jobs were in demand. Perry starred with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. Perry was in the show with their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was featured nine times on The Family, an ABC thriller The Family, in 2016. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on the ABC political drama Scandal that starred her father. In the same year, the actress was selected to play a young version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger character of her mom's role. The character was chosen via auditions the fact that she had a deep association with it.
